The second quarter earnings season has ushered in change for the stock market. The timing of this change may be somewhat coincidental, but I also believe that the relative strength trend shifts in many stocks is attributable to a more critical appraisal of earnings growth prospects.
For weeks, investors have grappled with the impending tapering of the Fed's Quantitative Easing mission. Some observers were quick to react to this, deeming it a major turning point in the central bank's long standing monetary accommodation. True to its admirable policy of transparency, the Fed did sound an early warning for Wall Street that some monetary policy adjustment would be forthcoming. But, it remains unlikely that interest rates will embark on a secular uptrend based on jobs data, inflation readings and other economic barometers. While the Fed's alert may have been a triggering mechanism for the current consolidation, correction has been orderly and characteristically similar to most other pullbacks in this cycle with sharp, but brief, retreats and rotational backing and filling price movements among the market's leading categories.
Unlike other downturns since March 2009, the prevailing retreat has introduced a more stock picking-focused environment that favors medium and small capitalization stocks. The Russell 2000 (RTY) Index, which is comprised of the 2,000 smallest companies in the Russell 3000 Index, has outpaced the DJIA on a total return basis by more than 500 basis points year to date with most of the relative strength strides occurring since June 30.

The Rise and Fall of Tontine Asset Management and ENGlobal (ENG)
Gendell rarely conducted interviews, almost never publicizing his stock selections or his theories in regard to investing. The average investor had never heard of him or his hedge fund; however anyone who tracked money managers closely, was well aware the outstanding returns which were flowing into the pockets of the clients at Tontine. In 2003 and 2004, Gendell recorded near miraculous gains, approximately doubling the value of his portfolios, in back to back years. - [By Roberto Pedone]
ENGlobal (ENG) provides engineering and professional services principally to the energy sector in the U.S. and internationally. This stock closed up 9% to $1.60 in Thursday's trading session.
Thursday's Range: $1.48-$1.63
52-Week Range: $0.30-$1.88
Thursday's Volume: 245,000
Three-Month Average Volume: 59,090From a technical perspective, ENG spiked sharply higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $1.50 with above-average volume. This move pushed shares of ENG into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.59. Shares of ENG are now starting to move within range of triggering another near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ENG manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.66 to $1.71 with high volume.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ENG as long as it's trending above Thursday's low of $1.48 or above more support at $1.40 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 59,090 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ENG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $1.88. Any high-volume move above that level will then give ENG a chance to tag $2 to $2.20.

Why did Weight Watchers International loose weight last Friday? So far,Gulfport Energy (NASDAQ: GPOR ) has had the best success rate in targeting the liquids rich part of the play. The company is spending $499 million of its $570 million capital budget this year on the Utica. Those funds will help drive the company's production from just over 7,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day last year to more than 21,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day this year. This is mainly due to the fact that Gulfport has been drilling some of the best wells in the play.
