BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- The stocks the "smart money" loves right now just may surprise you.
Professional investors have spent most of 2013 playing catch-up with the broad market indices. By and large, they were too slow to click "buy" when the rally kicked off last November, and they were too quick to hit "sell" when stocks temporarily corrected in June. As the S&P 500 hits its head on new all-time highs again this week, that's putting scores of fund managers in buy mode as we round the corner to August.
And a handful of their favorite names may come as a surprise. After all, for an industry that's focused on consumer-driven blue chips for most of the year, any move to out-of-favor tickers says a lot about portfolio managers' priorities. So today, we'll take a closer look atfive of their favorite surprise stocks.
To do that, we're focusing on 13F filings. Institutional investors with more than $100 million in assets are required to file a 13F -- a form that breaks down their stock positions for public consumption. From hedge funds to mutual funds to insurance companies, any professional investors who manage more than that $100 million watermark are required to file a 13F.

Let's take a deeper look at McDonald's (NYSE: MCD ) dividend-generation skills.
The fast-food giant just reported (link opens PDF) second-quarter earnings, with both sales and earnings falling slightly short of analyst estimates. Management sees tough times ahead in the second half of 2013 but also reminds investors that the company has "succeeded in a variety of operating and economic environments." All told, investors focused more on the negative short-term outlook than on the promise to come back swinging: McDonald's shares fell as much as 3.2% on the news, making it by far the weakest performer on the Dow (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) today.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) closed out essentially where it started today as McDonald's (NYSE: MCD ) earnings this morning cooled off what was an otherwise bullish day for Wall Street. While the Dow closed up just 2 points, or 0.01%, the S&P 500 gained 0.2%, ending at a record high for the third session in a row as a solid start to earnings season has lifted the market. About 64% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten earnings estimates. Only one economic report was released today, which showed June existing home sales coming at 5.08 million, slightly below May's mark of 5.14 million and below expectations at 5.28 million. Investors continue to be concerned that the housing recovery could cool off as mortgage rates have come up.

Getty Images There are some people who spend $5,000 each year going out to lunch. And then there are some who spend nothing. But according to a new Visa (V) survey, on average, Americans spend $936 a year -- or $10 per outing -- on restaurant-made lunches. That kind of money could easily help fund a winter trip to the beach, but it's going to stale chips, soda, and six-inch subs instead. Or, if you're among the 1 percent who spend more than $50 a lunch -- nearly $5,000 a year -- you'd have that beach trip completely covered. Here's a closer look at how the rest of us spend our lunch breaks: Men spend more. They spend 44 percent more, specifically: $21 weekly compared to $15 on average for women. So do the poor. Those who makes $25,000 or less spent more per meal, $11.70, than any other income bracket. Chitown = cheaptown. Midwesterners spent the least on eating out, just $8.90 per meal. Northeasterners ate out the least often -- just 1.5 times per week -- while Southerners spent an average of $10 each time on two weekly visits to the lunch counter. Resisting the temptation to get takeout for lunch can really pay off. "Simple choices have a large impact on your wallet," says Nat Sillin, Visa's head of U.S. Financial Education."Clipping a coupon, choosing a less expensive item, or brown-bagging it can save you hundreds over the course of a year." But Sillin isn't condemning eating lunch out. Rather, it's about being aware of how much you're spending and whether you can afford to spend that amount. "Going into debt for a tuna sandwich isn't worth it." Fair point. But what if you don't know where to start? Here are four tips for reducing your lunch tab without going hungry: 1. Bring leftovers. This should be obvious, but for many it isn't. Cook enough over the weekend for multiple weekday meals and then store the remainder in portable containers you can bring to work. Reheat, serve, and bask in the savings as you watch YouTube at your desk. 2. Buy frozen.

The card's been swiped and the money is on its way. Visa (NYSE: V ) has declared its latest common stock dividends, which are to be $0.33 per each class A and C share, and $0.139 in the case of class B. All will be handed out on Sept. 4 to holders of record as of Aug. 16. Those amounts match each of the credit card giant's three previous sets of distributions, the most recent of which was paid early last month. Before that, Visa handed out $0.22 per class A and C share, and $0.094 for class B.

Yet the challenge AmEx has faced for a long time is how to keep distinguishing itself in an industry that's increasingly dominated by leading payment-processors Visa (NYSE: V ) and MasterCard (NYSE: MA ) . Both Visa and MasterCard have essentially used their payment networks as toll roads, luring third-party issuing banks to market their cards to customers and profiting from transaction volume, and they've issued 10 to 20 times the number of cards that AmEx has. By contrast, AmEx has adopted a much more vertically integrated business model, wherein AmEx maintains a much deeper connection to its cardholders, taking on credit risk but also reaping the rewards when it makes smart decisions about extending credit.

You must be at least "this employed" to participate in our budget
It all started earlier this week for McDonald's, which insulted the very core of its customer base by teaming up with Visa (NYSE: V ) to create a budget planning website that it dubbed "Practical Money Skills for Life." The idea is actually a great one as citizens young and old of upper and lower incomes can always use the reminder and education about how to balance their income and spending. The execution, though, left a lot to be desired.

The S&P 500 gained 0.3% to 1,689.13 today, making it a perfect 7 and 0 in September. The Dow Jones Industrials, meanwhile, rose 135. 54 points, or 0.9% to 15,326.60. The Nasdaq Composite, however, edged 0.1% lower today thanks to the 5.4% drop in that behemoth known as Apple (AAPL).

Over in Russia, market-leading cell phone provider Mobile TeleSystems (NYSE: MBT ) has just confirmed that, as of 2012, it no longer sells Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL ) new iPhone models to its customers directly. The company does still stock, and sell, some older iPhone models. But for iPhone5 and on up, MTS now answers phone calls from Apple with a Spasibo, ne nada. ("Thanks, but no thanks.")

Following in stride, IBM (NYSE: IBM ) rose 2.5% in after-hours trading after reporting strong earnings despite a drop in revenue. Earnings per share rose to $3.91, ahead of the Street's consensus at $3.77, while revenue dipped 3% to $24.92 billion. Analysts had expected sales of $25.35 billion. Both service and hardware sales were down; however, software sales grew 4%. The tech giant also raised its EPS outlook to $16.90 from $16.70, and CFO Mark Loughridge said the company was poised to deliver earnings of $20 per share by 2015.

IBM (IBM) is an interesting example. I'm not sure Buffett would buy IBM if it weren't for the share buybacks. The company has worked to avoid dilution and reduce the share count over time. He singled this out as a reason for the purchase when he spoke on CNBC. There are other reasons for buying IBM. But I honestly don't believe Buffett would be buying IBM if instead of buying back shares over time IBM was treating its shares the way many tech companies do.

After losing 1.46% this past week, shares of IBM (NYSE: IBM ) ranked as the third worst performing Dow component of the week. The biggest decline came on Tuesday, when the stock fell 1.88% after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock from a "buy" to "neutral" and cut its price target from $220 to $200. The Goldman analyst responsible for the move was Bill Shope, who cited increasing pressure in emerging markets. IBM currently relies on such areas in its five-year growth plan for roughly $17 billion in revenue. This is certainly something current shareholders will need to keep an eye on, and if Shope is wrong, the stock may realize a nice move higher.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM ) will release its quarterly report on Thursday, and projections suggest that it will manage to deliver decent results for investors. But shareholders don't seem convinced about Philip Morris earnings, as they've recently sent the stock down substantially from its May highs.
- [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET.COM]
There are definitely concerns for Phillip Morris, which include decreased market share in many areas and poor debt management. However, up until this point, Phillip Morris has done a good job rewarding its shareholders. While history usually repeats itself, that not necessarily an all-positive in this case. Phillip Morris didn hold up well in 2008/early 2009. If a similar environment were to present itself again, then Phillip Morris wouldn be a top option regardless of the impressive yield. In the meantime, Phillip Morris is an OUTPERFORM.

However, since the recent sell-off began, all three companies have wiped out most of their gains so far this year.

The company offers its oral, personal, and home care products under the Colgate Total, Colgate Max Fresh, Colgate 360 Advisors' Opinion:
- [By Dividend Growth Investor]
In a previous article, I outlined that it is getting more difficult to find quality dividend paying stocks to buy. Most of the usual suspects like Kimberly-Clark (KMB) or Colgate-Palmolive (CL) are very overvalued today, which prevents me from adding to my positions there. Other companies like Chevron (CVX) are attractively valued today, but unfortunately my portfolio is overweight in them. Currently I find the oil sector to be cheap and have some of the lowest P/E ratios in the market. However, I would hate to be concentrated in one sector which is exposed to the fluctuating prices in its commodity products.
- [By Ong Kang Wei]
Another example of such a product is Colgate-Palmolive (CL)'s Colgate toothpaste. I do not think I have to elaborate much here. Toothpaste is needed in our everyday life, and we will definitely have to buy more toothpaste after we have finished using a packet of it, ensuring that Colgate gets more and more sales over the years.
- [By Jon C. Ogg]
Colgate-Palmolive Co. (NYSE: CL) was raised to Overweight from Equal Weight and the price target is now $68 (versus a $59.93 close) at Morgan Stanley.
