Alcoa Cannot Wait To Rally...Here's Why

10 Best Gold Stocks For 2015

Related AA Market Wrap For February 18: Dow Finishes Lower, Nasdaq Still Hot Top 4 NYSE Stocks In The Aluminum Industry With The Highest Revenue

After recovering from a substantial decline in January, the S&P 500 Index has returned to all time high territory. While the index did not exactly exude the most bullish predictions from the January effect, Alcoa (NYSE: AA) shares have.

Alcoa has rallied 11 percent so far in 2013, rallying from its year end of $10.63 to $11.81. Earlier in the year, the issue peaked at $12.31 before pulling back with the broad market. Also, the issue exhibited excellent relative strength during the market's steep decline earlier this month. Alcoa only came within a point of its low for the year ($9.82), when it bottomed on February 10 ($10.83) as the broad market revisited late October lows.

Alcoa shares, which are quite some distance from its all time high from back in July 2007 ($48.77) and are much closer to March 2009 low ($4.97). More importantly, the issue finally broke out of a two year trading range ($7.63-$11.02) in January and successfully tested the former resistance area recently and responded within a sharp rally.

While the technicals are looking favorable for Alcoa, the fundamentals are looking even better. So much, that the issue has been garnering of the attention of Wall Street's most respected firms.

Goldman Sachs has been all over the issue since late November. On November 25, the firm upgraded Alcoa from neutral to Buy and raised its price target from $8.00-$11.00. JP Morgan followed suit on January 21, upgrading the issue from Neutral to Overweight and raised their price target from $9.00-$15.00.

Recently, Goldman Sachs joined JP Morgan and bumped its price target to $15.00 as well. Goldman Sachs analyst Sal Tharani, cited the increased demand for aluminum from the Aerospace and Automotive industry was going to "game changer: for the steel market.

The firm believes the gradual conversion of automotive exposed body to aluminum (Body-in-White or BiW) will be a huge boon to downstream aluminum use, producing a high growth rate versus other metals for the rest of the decade.

As evidenced by Ford Motor (NYSE: F) as it unveiled its aluminum F-150 at the Detroit Auto Show, who set a new standard in the industry that several others manufacturers will surely follow. The new F-150 will weigh 700 pounds less than its predecessor and in turn will have 30 percent better fuel economy due to its lighter body.

On Wednesday, General Motors (NYSE: GM) confirmed this change in trend as it announced it is accelerating efforts to field a largely aluminum-bodied truck pickup truck by 2018. This action was clearly a direct response to Ford and the need to keep up with federal fuel efficiency standards.

As a result, aluminum could very well be the fastest-growing commodity over the next several years. Alcoa expects aluminum auto sheets to grow at a 14 percent CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) from 2012 through 2025. Also, the company expects the market to grow more than 50 percent from 2012 through 2016. By 2025, they expect the average aluminum content per vehicle in North America to increase by 200 pounds to 550 pounds by 2025.

With large commercial aerospace build rates at all time highs and expected to continue, the materials needed produce will increase as well. Also, as the industry shifts toward wide-body aircrafts, more aluminum plate will be needed to accommodate the change in size.

While the aerospace and automotive industry competing for existing aluminum supplies, any other new users of Aluminum will impact the supply and demand and drive prices higher. These factors coupled with continued cost cutting initiatives in its upstreaming businesses by Alcoa puts the company in a good position to capitalize on the changing trend in the metals market.

Finally, we are bearish on CRM in the near term and mixed in the long term. We recently published a long-term outlook on CRM with a Hold rating. We do see the company as quite overvalued in the sense of future P/E, which stands at 66. Further, we believe that the company will see rising competition from the likes of Oracle (ORCL) and IBM (IBM) who want a larger piece of the cloud network pie. In the near term, we believe CRM could see some pretty strong correcting with such large valuations, but in the long term, we do see CRM as being a much better potential play than some other cloud networking companies. CRM will likely see a hit if the market corrects as investors abandon high growth names during market corrections. Further, CRM cannot make any mistakes moving forward to continue to maintain that P/E ratio.

Plains All American Pipeline LP(PAA) said its fourth-quarter earnings fell 13%, hurt by weaker adjusted results at its supply-and-logistics business.

  • [By CanadianValue]

At the end of 2011, Advance Auto Parts (AAP) and Oeilly Automotive (ORLY) were the fifth- and tenth-largest positions in the Fund, respectively, and together constituted 6.2% of our assets. Auto parts retail is a difficult business for all but the most efficient players. An auto parts retailer must carry literally thousands of hard parts for hundreds of models of cars. Not many people walk in the door needing an alternator for a 1994 Ford, but the person who does is probably experiencing a crisis. The retailer who can manage a substantial investment in slow-turning parts inventory is able to earn a high margin on sales.

  • [By Lawrence Meyers]

Oeilly Automotive (ORLY) is also a $15 billion company with 4,000 stores in the US alone. It holds $1.4 billion in debt and $366 million in cash, and generates strongly increasing levels of free cash flow — from $350 million in FY10 to $800 million in FY11, up to $950 million in FY12. It has a projected long-term growth rate of 17.3%, and trades at a FY13 P/E of 18.5. The stock is a bit pricey, but the fantastic cash flow trend, and 3% interest on debt makes it a compelling consideration.

Valentine's Day dilemma: OK to e-mail a card?

Valentine's Day has always been about risky choices such as chocolates or flowers and whether to pop the question or not, but now the holiday has come down to whether it's VC (Valentine Correct) to send an e-card instead of a greeting card.

Traditional Valentine's Day cards won't be going away anytime soon. "Even my 18-year-old daughter said if she only got a text rather than a card from her boyfriend, she'd be unhappy," says Kathy Krassner, director of communications for the Greeting Card Association in Washington, D.C.

That's one reason Krassner anticipates sales of Valentine's Day cards will "remain relatively stable over last year's number of 145 million purchased."

Nevertheless, compared with sales of other gifts associated with Valentine's Day, greeting cards will exhibit the least amount of growth in 2014, according to IBISWorld. The research firm expects just 0.9% growth in the category on an annual basis compared with 2.1% for clothing and lingerie, 2.5% for candy, 3.9% for flowers, 4.1% for dining out, 4.2% for jewelry and 5.1% for a romantic getaway.

Additionally, just weeks before Valentine's Day, the cost of a first-class stamp was raised to 49 cents. The increase could not have come at a worse time for the greeting card industry because, according to the Greeting Card Association, roughly 60% of greeting cards are sent using the United States Postal Service. And with Valentine's Day being the second largest holiday (after Christmas) for purchasing cards, IBISWorld industry analyst Brandon Ruiz says that consumers will be "less likely to purchase greetings cards and more likely to purchase e-cards, which are more affordable."

Thousands of electronic valentines, many incorporating animation and music, can be personalized and e-mailed from a variety of websites. E-card prices range from free to $12 to $15 as part of an annual subscription.

Krassner says she's not sure how the postal hike will impact Valentine's Day sales, since many of those cards are hand! ed over in person. One thing she is certain about is that a real card has more of an impact.

"If someone makes the effort to go out and purchase it, and maybe put a stamp on it, that shows a physical expression of how much you care," she says.

While the rate rise may be seen as anti-Valentine, the Postal Service has taken some steps to woo card-inclined clientele. On Jan. 21, it released the Cut Paper Heart Forever Stamp, this year's limited-edition Love stamp.

The Post Office describes the stamp as "a large white heart enclosing a smaller pink heart with a saw-toothed edge along its left-hand side." Within a week dozens of people said they liked the design on the USPS Stamp's Facebook page. Best of all, the stamp is immune to future rate hikes. Who says love isn't forever?

Beyond the damage caused by postal rate hikes, Ruiz says that "greeting card retailers have struggled to capture a younger customer base." Instead of visiting brick-and-mortar stores, "Consumers aged 24 and younger are increasingly deferring to digital services. Younger demographics are also opting to use social media websites, such as Facebook, as a substitute for purchasing greeting cards." Still, IBISWorld expects e-cards will account for a mere $25 million or 0.4% of the greeting card retailing industry in 2014.

As we're just one day away from Feb. 14, you'll need to decide quickly whether it's appropriate (or VC) to e-mail a virtual card or get an actual card.

Top 5 Healthcare Technology Stocks To Own Right Now: Yamana Gold Inc.(AUY)

Yamana Gold Inc. engages in gold and other precious metals mining, and related activities, including exploration, extraction, processing, and reclamation. It also explores for copper, molybdenum, zinc, and silver metals. The company's portfolio includes 7 operating gold mines namely Chapada; El Pen Advisors' Opinion:

  • [By Pato Kehoe] to remain profitable throughout 2013, and is keen on repeat success in 2014.

    What Yamana Did Right

One of the main reasons Yamana has achieved rather good results throughout the past year, is their focus on low-cost mining. In particular, the firm established lower price assumptions and thus avoided asset write-downs. A quick comparison to industry rivals Barrick Gold Corporation (ABX) and Newmont Mining Corporation (NEM) is noteworthy. While Yamana valued its reserves and resources with a price of $950 per ounce of gold, Barrick expected prices in the $1,300 per ounce range. Newmont also overestimated the value of its assets, bringing its valuation down from $1,500 per ounce to $1,400 per ounce as of its second quarter. In the end, Barrick and Newmont each took $8.7 billion and $1.77 billion, respectively, in asset write-downs.

    Low-Cost Profile, Expansion and Diversification

Yamana conservative valuation policy certainly contributed to the higher profitability the firm achieved in 2013, as did the below-average production costs the firm achieved. Looking forward, this means the company is in a comfortable position to continue developing existing projects. Unlike Barrick Pascua-Lama project, which was put on hold this year, Yamana has several promising new mines underway. The pipeline is full of attractive projects, including a few advanced-stage operations such as Pilar, C1 Santa Luz and Ernesto mines. Naturally, these are rather modest operations in terms of scale, particularly compared to Barrick Pascua-Lama mine, yet this also facilitates completion.

A touch of diversification also helped Yamana along the way during the harsh year for gold miners. The firm portfolio includes silver and copper mines in Central and South America, which have delivered steady streams of cash for the company. In addition, Yamana cost profile is rather attractive, due to the high metal grades of its mines.

The second factor working in gold stocksfavor is that analysts are growing optimistic again. Yesterday, HSBC put out a bullish note on gold and upgraded Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM), Yamana Gold (AUY), Barrick Gold, Iamgold (IAG), and Goldcorp.
